Do I have OCD?
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health disorder that affects about one in 100 adults and can cause severe distress in one’s daily life. OCD involves the presence of obsessive, intrusive, and disturbing thoughts that are typically followed by compulsive and repetitive behaviors or mental acts that aim to reduce one’s distress. These obsessions and compulsions are likely time-consuming, exhausting, and can interfere with one’s values, relationships, work life, and overall quality of life. There are many types of OCD, including ones involving fears around contamination, perfectionism, harm to self or others, religious or moral acts, and loss of control over one’s actions. If you suspect you may suffer from OCD you may contact me for an evaluation. For more information on OCD visit https://iocdf.org/.
How do you treat OCD?
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy that involves gradual exposure to one’s fears and reducing the compulsive behaviors or responses to those fears. This can be done safely in a telehealth outpatient setting with an ERP specialist, and is considered the “gold standard” treatment for OCD. Together, the therapist and client will work through exposure exercises and tasks, and homework is often utilized to improve results.
